DOES TEA COUNT AS WATER.

You know when you open your phone or laptop to look up something “quickly” ~ just one thing ~ and 45 minutes later you’re reading about how octopuses dream, watching someone’s morning routine in Bali, and googling whether tea counts as water?
That. That’s how the mind works.
We set off with a single, simple thought: “I need to email that person.” But as we reach for the phone or open the laptop, another thought pops in ~ “Did I ever hear back from them?” ~ which triggers “Let me just check my messages,” which turns into “Oh look, someone posted about that retreat I was thinking of…” and suddenly, we’re knee-deep in someone else’s life, or reliving a conversation from three years ago, or silently judging ourselves for not being more productive.
It’s like getting lost on the internet ~ but internally.
The mind clicks from one tab to another, chasing relevance, meaning, stimulation… anything but stillness.
And the thing is: it feels active. It feels like something is happening. It can even feel productive ~ like we’re processing things, figuring things out.
But often, we’re just spinning.
Meditation, is like stepping away from the screen. Not to deny the tabs exist ~ they’re there, sure. But to simply observe the urge to click, to scroll, to dive into one more article of thought. To notice the addictive quality of mental motion without needing to follow every link.
You don’t have to close all the tabs at once. You don’t have to fight them. Just stop clicking. Just sit. Breathe.
Let the tabs fade to the background.
In that stillness, the mind “reboots”… in its own time.
And in that reboot, we remember that we are not the browser. We are the quiet awareness behind it all ~ spacious, calm, clear.
So next time your inner world starts to spiral like a late-night internet deep dive, just smile. Recognise the pattern. And gently return to yourself, to now.
There’s peace here.
And those pop-ups?… They’ll pop down ~ automatically. No input necessary.
