We hear the word narcissist so often these days when attempting to describe those who are extremely self absorbed and cause harm with little to no empathy.
And we may have questions such as how is narcissism formed and can it be healed?
So let’s unpack this.
At birth we are given a name and over our lifetimes we are shown/told by elders and peers who they believe we are. Due to this an identity is formed.
For example, we may be told or shown that we aren’t good enough. This can come in words or it may come in the form of neglect, abuse, trauma.
The mistaken beliefs that are put on to us are built up and create a character. We take this on as truth. The severity of this conditioning will vary from person to person of course.
However, it doesn’t matter who you are, the same thing happens to each of us. A fixation on the self is formed. This self we may refer to as ego identity.
Unless we see who we truly are before this conditioning, we become lost in the story of self and the label of narcissism is a way to describe the extreme form of this.
An extreme form of being lost in the story of me.
Yes we have a name, we have a body, there is a mind with an array of thought/belief about ourselves. However where did this come from? Is it truly ours?
The short answer is No ~ it all came from others ~ you see?
What we may be unconscious of however is that not only are we living from this conditioned story but it is not who we truly are.
Who we truly are has become veiled by belief.
So who are we? Really?
Who we truly are is the awareness that is conscious of this created ego/character identity that we had once believed ourselves to be.
So can this be healed?
Rather than being healed, what happens is that the fixation of character, appearance, personality, the injustices of life, annoyances of others, emotions and thought are ~seen~ rather than entangled with.
As we open up to seeing this, the seriousness of the character and traits starts to dissolve ~ we see that they were never ours and in turn our actions and reactions soften as do our emotions.
We see through the unnatural of identity and return to an all natural Self Love.
Through a combination of awareness based meditation and talking with another who has seen through this in its entirety, it is entirely possible to dissolve these traits and to remember the truth of who we really are...
This IS Self Realisation.
In its place, Peace & Love IS free to shine through which in turn makes for more harmonious relationships all round.
It is important to note that this cannot be forced into or upon oneself or others however ~ It takes a deep trust in this process over the pull of ego identity.
It is also very much worth noting that as you begin to see through this, others may still be lost, so it is wise to continue to keep ourselves safe and at times we may need to stay away from others even if we know the truth of who they are too.
Boundaries may still be needed but all can be done through the eyes of Love.
