You never go back to square one

One of the most common things I hear from people is this:

“I thought I’d got this… then the struggle came back really strongly and now I feel like I’m back to square one.”

It feels convincing.

It feels true.

But it isn’t.

Because every time the struggle rises and you meet it, something is happening beneath the surface, even if it doesn’t feel like it.

Think about learning to drive.

The first time you pull onto a busy road your whole body tenses. Your heart races. You overthink every decision.

Then one day, without even realising when it happened, you’re driving while chatting to someone beside you.

Not because the roads changed.

Because you did.

The same is true with the struggles.

The mind says,

“This is different.”

“This one’s too much.”

“I’ve lost all my progress.”

But these are simply more thoughts appearing during another wave of.

The wave itself isn’t the setback.

Believing the story that you’ve failed is what keeps the struggle alive.

Every single person on this journey goes through this.

Every.

Single.

One.

There are moments when the fear feels overwhelming again. Moments where you wonder if you’ll ever be free.

Yet each wave is another opportunity to stop fighting.

To stop trying to make the feeling disappear.

To allow the body to do what bodies naturally do.

Settle.

You are not starting again.

You are simply being invited to trust a little more deeply than you did last time.

Progress rarely feels like progress while it’s happening.

It often feels messy.

It feels uncertain.

Sometimes it even feels worse.

But just as every visit to the gym strengthens muscles you can’t yet see, every time you allow emotion to rise without believing it or battling it, you’re strengthening something far more important.

Your trust.

And eventually there comes a moment where you realise something profound.

The emotions, the thoughts may still visit from time to time.

But the fight doesn’t.

And that changes everything.
